Water: Commitments and Actions

An important part of Pfizer's responsibility as a global health care company is our commitment to ensure water use does not negatively impact sustainable access to water or water quality in the communities where we operate.

While Pfizer's net water use continues to decline, approximately 10 percent is consumed in water-stressed or scarce areas as defined by WHO and UNICEF under the Joint Monitoring Program (JMP). The majority of our sites in these regions have implemented water conservation measures with additional focus on water reuse and recycling.

While we have not formally established a public goal for water reduction at this time, internal targets have been set on the site and regional level with the baseline expectation to decrease water use. As part of Pfizer's Environmental Sustainability Program, sustaining access to potable water includes commitments to:

  • Perform a comprehensive water accounting risk analysis of our operations
  • Evaluate additional partnerships with government and non-government organizations
  • Determine water footprint of high use processes
  • Increase focus on conservation measures and community outreach efforts at locations in water-stressed or scarce areas
  • Implement additional operational controls to further efficiencies in water recycle and reuse
  • Establish baseline and determine whether a global or regional based water use reduction is most impacting
  • Understand our extended water footprint with suppliers in water-stressed locations

Actions to increase water use efficiency span a broad spectrum and include conservation projects that:

  • Re-circulate water for scrubbers that reduce air pollution
  • Systematically identify and repair leaks
  • Reduce water use in activated carbon systems for utilities support
  • Reuse treated wastewater in cooling towers
  • Decrease loading to the deionization water process
  • Collect rain water to re-load well water supply
  • Treat wastewater for landscape irrigation
